Update 8/1/10
Ginger has had her surgery with total success. The perineal hernia
was repaired successfully. The doctor also found a weak muscle that would eventually
tear and he repaired that at the same time.
Ginger is doing wonderfully. Thank you to everyone who donated
on her behalf.
Ginger is a 5 pound, 8-10 year old Yorkshire Terrier. She is precious. Ginger is very sweet and loving. She was found running down Ocean Boulevard/Grand Strand, Myrtle
Beach, SC. She had been running so long on the hot pavement that her feet were bloody and bruised. She was in such terrible shape that the shelter did not think she
would make it. The GrandStrand Shelter vaccinated her, spayed her, gave her a dental and repaired a hernia in her groin. Right before she came to North Carolina to
be fostered, a perineal hernia popped out on her back side/anal area.

A perineal hernia occurs when there is an abnormal displacement of the pelvic and/or abdominal organs (small intestine, rectum, prostate, bladder, or fat) into the
region around the anus called the perineum. This condition occurs secondary to a weakening of the muscles, which form the pelvic diaphragm. Signs of this problem
include straining to urinate or have a bowel movement, constipation, and swelling around the anal region. This type of repair is very serious and must be done by a
skilled veterinary surgeon. The minimal cost of this surgery is $1,800 to $2,000.
It is very apparent that Ginger has had a rough life. There is evidence that she has had multiple pregnancies which most likely have contributed to the occurrence of
this perineal hernia. Please consider donating for Ginger to have this surgery so that she has a chance to get the love and attention she deserves.
